Symmetry leaf hunt
Collect leaves, fold them down the middle and sort them into the almost symmetrical and the wonderfully wonky.
Nature is nearly symmetrical, never quite. Spotting the difference is real maths, done with muddy hands.
What you need
- A bag or basket
- Leaves of many shapes
- Paper and a pencil
How to do it
- 1
Gather ten different leaves on a short walk.
- 2
Fold each one gently down its middle vein.
- 3
Sort them into two piles: the halves that match and the halves that do not.
- 4
Draw round your favourite leaf, then draw the missing half from memory and compare.
- 5
Talk about why one side of a leaf might grow bigger than the other.
