Bird cake for winter birds
Mix seed into softened fat, press it into a cup and hang it out for the hungriest month.
Small birds can lose a tenth of their weight on a cold night. A fat cake is a genuine rescue.
What you need
- Lard or suet at room temperature
- Birdseed, oats and raisins
- An old cup, yoghurt pot or half a coconut
- String
How to do it
- 1
Squash the fat and dry mix together with clean hands until it holds.
- 2
Push string through a hole in the pot so it will hang.
- 3
Press the mix in firmly and chill it for an hour.
- 4
Hang it where a cat cannot reach and sit still nearby.
- 5
Keep a tally of which birds visit over the week.
