Frozen bubble hunt
On a freezing morning, blow bubbles outside and watch crystals grow across them before they pop.
Below freezing, a bubble grows feathers of ice. It takes ten seconds and children remember it for years.
What you need
- Bubble mixture and a wand
- A very cold morning, ideally below freezing
- A dark glove or a cold plate to catch bubbles on
How to do it
- 1
Leave the bubble mix outside for ten minutes so it is properly cold.
- 2
Blow gently and catch a bubble on a gloved hand or a cold plate.
- 3
Watch closely for feathery ice creeping across the surface.
- 4
Time how long a bubble lasts and compare it with one blown indoors.
- 5
Draw the ice patterns you saw before your fingers get too cold.
