Garden sound map
Sit still for five minutes, mark every sound on a map and discover how loud quiet really is.
Listening is a skill, and it grows quickly when nobody is talking.
What you need
- Paper and a pencil
- Somewhere to sit outside
- Five quiet minutes
How to do it
- 1
Draw a small cross in the middle of your paper. That is you.
- 2
Sit still and mark each sound where you hear it coming from.
- 3
Use a squiggle for wind, a dot for a bird, a line for a car.
- 4
Compare maps if more than one of you is listening.
- 5
Do it again at a different time of day and talk about what changed.
