Frogspawn watch and life cycle wheel
Look for spawn in a local pond, then make a spinning wheel that shows each stage in order.
A life cycle makes sense when your child has seen even one stage of it with their own eyes.
What you need
- A pond you can visit safely with an adult
- Two paper circles
- A split pin or a pencil and tape
- Pens
How to do it
- 1
Visit a pond edge in early spring and look for spawn or tadpoles, hands staying dry.
- 2
Back home, draw four stages on one circle: spawn, tadpole, froglet, frog.
- 3
Cut a window in the second circle and pin it on top so one stage shows at a time.
- 4
Spin the wheel and tell the story out loud.
- 5
Visit the same pond a fortnight later and see which stage has arrived.
