Magnet hunt and the iron in cereal
Test the house for magnetic metals, then pull real iron out of a bowl of crushed cereal.
There is iron in breakfast. Watching a magnet drag it through the water is genuinely startling.
What you need
- A strong magnet, a fridge magnet will do
- Fortified breakfast cereal
- A clear bowl of warm water
- A spoon
How to do it
- 1
Walk round the house testing spoons, coins, radiators and door handles, sorting them into magnetic and not.
- 2
Crush a handful of cereal to powder and stir it into warm water.
- 3
Leave it ten minutes, stirring now and then, until it goes sludgy.
- 4
Drag the magnet slowly along the outside of the bowl and look for dark specks following it.
- 5
Talk about why iron is added to cereal and what your body uses it for.
