Red cabbage colour potions
Boil red cabbage to make a purple liquid, then turn it pink or green with things from the kitchen.
Red cabbage water is a real acid test, the same idea chemists use, made in a saucepan.
What you need
- A quarter of a red cabbage
- A pan and a sieve
- Clear cups or jars
- Lemon juice, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, soap
How to do it
- 1
Simmer chopped cabbage in water for ten minutes, then cool and strain the purple liquid.
- 2
Pour a little into six clear cups.
- 3
Add a different kitchen ingredient to each one and stir.
- 4
Line the cups up from pinkest to greenest and talk about acids and alkalis.
- 5
Predict what toothpaste or fizzy water will do, then test it.
