Stick race and river map
Race sticks under a bridge, then draw a map of the stream showing where the water runs fastest.
Every stream has fast bits and slow bits. Racing sticks is how you find them.
What you need
- Two or three sticks each
- A safe bridge or stream bank with an adult
- Paper and a pencil
- Wellies
How to do it
- 1
Drop your sticks together on the upstream side and run to watch them appear.
- 2
Race three times and see whether the same side of the stream always wins.
- 3
Draw the stream on paper, marking the fast water and the still pools.
- 4
Add the wildlife you spot and where the shade falls.
- 5
Talk about why the outside of a bend flows faster.
