Two loaf yeast test
Make two small doughs, leave the yeast out of one, and find out what yeast actually does.
Bread is a science lesson you can eat. One missing ingredient makes the whole thing obvious.
What you need
- 500g plain or bread flour
- A sachet of dried yeast
- Warm water and a little salt
- Two bowls and two loaf tins
How to do it
- 1
Mix flour, a pinch of salt and warm water in both bowls, adding yeast to one only.
- 2
Knead each dough for five minutes and shape them into two little loaves.
- 3
Draw round each loaf on paper so you can see how much they grow.
- 4
Leave both somewhere warm for an hour, checking every fifteen minutes.
- 5
Bake both, then cut them open and talk about the holes in each one.
