Bee cafe and pollinator count
Plant or place a few flowering pots, then sit still for ten minutes and count every visitor.
Counting is easy. Sitting still enough to count bees is the real skill, and it is a lovely one.
What you need
- A flowering plant or a pot of herbs
- A shallow saucer with pebbles and water
- A cushion to sit on
- A tally chart
How to do it
- 1
Put the flowering pot in a sunny sheltered spot.
- 2
Fill the saucer with pebbles and a little water so bees can drink safely.
- 3
Sit a metre away and stay still for ten minutes.
- 4
Make a tally of bees, hoverflies, butterflies and anything else that lands.
- 5
Repeat at a different time of day and compare the two counts.
