Butter in a jar
Shake cream in a jam jar until it turns into real butter, then taste it on toast.
Ten minutes of shaking and cream becomes two things. Children never forget the moment it separates.
What you need
- 300ml double cream at room temperature
- A clean jam jar with a tight lid
- A pinch of salt
- Bread for tasting
How to do it
- 1
Half fill the jar with cream and screw the lid on tightly.
- 2
Take turns shaking, counting the shakes out loud.
- 3
After a few minutes it thickens like whipped cream, so keep going.
- 4
Stop when a lump of butter and a pool of buttermilk separate.
- 5
Pour off the buttermilk, rinse the butter, add salt and spread it on toast.
