A drawbridge is a pulley, a lever and a good story all at once.

What you need

  • A large cardboard box
  • Scissors and tape
  • String
  • Two split pins or a pencil for the axle

How to do it

  1. 1

Cut a doorway in the box, leaving the bottom edge joined as a hinge.

  2. 2

Cut two small holes at the top corners of the doorway.

  3. 3

Thread string through the holes and tape the ends to the drawbridge.

  4. 4

Pull both strings together to raise the bridge, then adjust until it sits flat.

  5. 5

Add towers, battlements and a moat drawn on the floor, then defend it.
