Foil boat cargo challenge
Make three foil boats of different shapes and find out which carries the most coins before sinking.
Same amount of foil, wildly different results. That is design, tested in a washing up bowl.
What you need
- Kitchen foil, three equal squares
- A bowl or sink of water
- A pile of coins or marbles
- Paper for scores
How to do it
- 1
Cut three squares of foil exactly the same size.
- 2
Shape one into a flat raft, one into a deep cup and one into a long canoe.
- 3
Float each and add coins one at a time, counting as you go.
- 4
Record how many each boat held before water came in.
- 5
Build a fourth boat using what you learnt and try to beat all three.
